The Forever Changing Workforce: Upskilling

Upskilling is not a new idea in the workforce, but it is a subject that everyone is talking about! So, what to do? Offer more training courses to employees? Read more in our final blog (3/3) of the Forever Changing Workforce blog series.

What Is Upskilling?

Upskilling is needed now more than ever due to the crazy past few years we have had. Upskilling decreases the skills gap so many employees and companies are experiencing, and it’s a smaller investment than hiring and training a new worker. The thing is though, it’s not as easy as just offering a few skill courses to your employees. There needs to be a whole new culture of development in your company. What is new about upskilling today is the extent to which companies are experiencing shortages of technical skills, and that in turn, is sky-rocketing competition for high-value employees both inside and outside of their area of work. So there’s a new demand around upskilling that many people are not familiar or comfortable with.

Why Upskilling Is Needed

Upskilling your employees can save you more money than you may realize. However, many factors go into upskilling that make this process difficult, the number one barrier being “I don’t have time” or “No motivation” Learning new skills requires a huge investment of time from workers, time that could be spent on current work duties instead. That means the majority of the responsibility to succeed is up to employers and managers. Employers will need a great incentive or motivating factor to get these employees to dedicate their time. But, once the upskilling process is complete, not only is the company benefiting from this, the individual who underwent this upskilling is trained and skilled in even more areas than before, broadening their horizon and scope of work. This allows employees to explore new areas of work which can ultimately lead to an increase in company culture.
