The Director of Finance for a nonprofit organization is responsible for overseeing all financial operations, ensuring that the organization’s financial health aligns with its mission and goals. This role involves managing budgeting, financial planning, reporting, compliance, and accounting functions, while providing strategic guidance to senior leadership and the board of directors. The Director of Finance will also lead financial analysis, manage audits, and ensure that all financial practices comply with nonprofit regulations and industry best practices.
Key Responsibilities:
- Oversee the organization’s financial operations, including accounting, budgeting, financial reporting, and financial analysis.
- Develop and manage the annual budget, providing guidance to department heads on financial planning and resource allocation.
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements, ensuring accuracy and compliance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).
- Manage the annual audit process, liaising with external auditors and ensuring timely completion of audits and regulatory filings.
- Provide strategic financial recommendations to the Executive Director/CEO and Board of Directors, helping drive decision-making and organizational planning.
- Develop and implement financial policies and procedures to maintain financial integrity, transparency, and efficiency.
- Monitor cash flow, investments, and financial risks, ensuring the organization has the necessary liquidity to meet operational needs.
Position Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, or a related field (Master’s or CPA is a plus).
- 7+ years of experience in financial management, with at least 3-5 years in a senior finance role, ideally within a nonprofit organization.
- Expertise in financial reporting, budgeting, and financial analysis.
- Ability to manage audits and work with external auditors effectively.
- Strong understanding of grant accounting and the financial oversight of restricted funds.
- Excellent leadership and management skills, with the ability to mentor and develop finance staff.
