Maryland Unemployment Update


Unemployment

Maryland gained 11,500 jobs and the unemployment rate decreased to 6.1% in May. It has now been 13 consecutive months that Maryland has seen job growth. Since January 1, 2021, MD has gained a total of 41,200 jobs. The Education and Health Services jobs experienced the most growth with an increase of 4,700 jobs from the Health Care and Social Assistance (2,600) and Educational Services (2,100). Other fields that experienced growth include: Trade, Transportation, and Utilities (1,900); Leisure and Hospitality (1,600); Other Services (1,000); Professional and Business Services (800); and Information (300). Only two fields experienced a decline in jobs, and they are Manufacturing (400) and Financial Activities (200)

Fraud

The Maryland Department of Labor announced that the department has detected over 508,000 fraudulent new unemployment claims since the beginning of May. “In fact, an astonishing 1.3 million claims flagged by the state have been confirmed as fraudulent since the beginning of the pandemic” Said Governor Larry Hogan. June was the heaviest month for fraudulent claims with 139,106.
